FAQ

Why would I want a sighting to be private?

In most cases, we hope you'll make your sightings publicly available, for the benefit of all Birdzoom users. However, there are some scenarios in which it might make sense for you to keep a sighting to yourself. For example:

  • If the sighting was of a rare or otherwise vulnerable bird that could be disturbed by an influx of visitors
  • If the sighting occurred in a sensitive habitat that could be damaged by more visitors
  • If the sighting occurred on private property and the land owner doesn't want visitors
  • etcetera

If you're unsure, a good resource is the American Birding Association's Principles of Birding Ethics.
